Why I switched to natural and organic skincare

Back in 2013 when my journey within the Spa and Beauty industry began, I was fortunate to work with and meet some very inspiring people. there was a one person who had a major impact on my journey to where I am now. I remember that spark in her eyes when she explained the benefits of botanical ingredients and the difference between truly organic skincare and companies labelling themselves as organic. It inspired me to dig deeper and do my own research.

What I discovered was that the beauty industry comes with a big, ugly price tag: decimation of forests, cruel practices of animal testing and hundreds of thousands of toxic chemicals in cosmetics that have never been tested for health and safety. Manufacturers can hide chemical ingredients like nano materials, fragrances, extractions, and fermentations in their formulas without needing to disclose the original source or starting material on the label. Trade secrets or proprietary ingredients are considered intellectual property and are protected under the guise of fragrance, perfume, and flavorings. Did you know that a fragrance alone may include over 3000 different chemicals, none of which are required to be listed on the product packaging?

As the trend of environmental and health awareness grows, consumers and producers are becoming more open to the usage of natural cosmetics. With that in mind, there is also a lot of greenwashing going on in the beauty industry- labelling, marketing or making products appear ‘natural’ regardless of containing concoction of chemicals and maybe as little as 1% of natural or organic ingredients.

There was a lot to explore and the list continues, but the main thing I discovered was my very own passion for organic ingredients  and an immense respect for the founders of organic skincare brands who deeply care about the environment and the health of their customers. 

I have been using organic skincare ever since and never looked back. What I love about organic skincare is that all the unnecessary synthetic fillers and preservatives have been replaced with nature’s active ingredients that care for the skin on a cellular level feeding and nurturing it. Every element has its purpose for us to reap the benefits of what nature has to offer.
